Tiger to host strong field in December

The Chevron World Challenge, hosted by Tiger Woods, will showcase a strong 18 man field at Sherwood Golf Club. The event will take place December 2-5 in Thousand Oaks, California.

The field will consist of:

Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Martin Kaymer, Jim Furyk, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Hunter Mahan, Zach Johnson, Anthony Kim, Bubba Watson, Sean O'Hair, Camillo Villegas, Stewart Cink

Woods spoke with the media about the upcoming tournament. Here are a few excerpts.

"Well, it's great to be back. Looking forward to getting out there and playing. I haven't played in the last couple of years, unfortunately, but looking forward to this year with this year's field. The depth and the strength of it is something we've never experienced before. And with the ranking points from last year going into this year as well, I think from what I've talked to some of the players at the Ryder Cup, they're really excited about playing, really excited about getting out there, especially the first timers that have never been out here before. It's going to be a great week. I know the weather isn't perfect today. I know you guys are going to go out there and play. I heard the golf course is in great shape, and the new practice facility is remarkable, so hope everyone enjoys it."

Q. You're a four-time winner of this tournament. How would you evaluate your chances of winning for the fifth time, given the state of your game and now that you know what the field is?

TIGER WOODS: Well, my game's coming around, so the way I played at the Ryder Cup and then hopefully -- I know I have two more events prior to the Chevron event. Hopefully, I can get two more W's before I get to Chevron and see what happens.

Q. How is your health, and pretty much how is your confidence lately as far as your game and everything?

TIGER WOODS: Oh, I feel good. I feel good about my game as well. At the Ryder Cup, I played pretty good and especially in the singles match. I've had a little time off and still got a couple more weeks off before I head to China and Australia, so looking forward to that practice time and getting a little bit more prepared.

This should be an interesting event to end the 2010 golf season with many of the world's top players. We shall see if Woods can get a win.

Foley on Woods

Sean Foley spoke with the NY Times on how many majors his new student would win.

"It's not a function of if he will break Jack's records, it's a matter of when," Foley told the Times. "Tiger is only 34. He's got basically 12 more years, and that's 48 more majors to win four [to tie Nicklaus]. I don't know how many majors he will win, but it's definitely more than 18.

"I'll go with 22 or 23."

I agree. Perfect logic.

British media member tries to bait Woods

British media member to Tiger Woods at his Tuesday press conference:

"You don't win majors anymore, you don't win regular tournaments anymore and you are about to be deposed by Europeans as the world No. 1 or by Phil Mickelson. Where is the Ryder Cup now on your agenda now that you're an ordinary golfer?"

Woods:

"I remember, you're the same one at the British Open who asked me that, too," Woods said, forcing a smile. "I hope you're having a good week."

As a U.S. fan, I hope to see many, many Tiger fist pumps this week in Wales.

Tiger vs. Rory

It's not exactly major trash talk but for golf at least it's something.

Rory McIlroy had this to say a few weeks back about Woods.

"Unless his game rapidly improves," McIlroy said, "I think anyone in the European team would fancy their chances against him."

Asked what he thought of taking on McIlroy, Woods simply said "Me too", which in Tiger speak means, I can't wait for the opportunity to shut any of these Europeans up.

It would be great to see a Tiger vs. McIlroy or Tiger vs. Poulter match on Sunday.

Fed Ex Cup Championship Betting Odds

With $10 million up for grabs this weekend, the top 30 players in the Fed Ex Cup point standings will tee it up at The Tour Championship in Georgia.

Here is what needs to happen for each player:

1. Phil Mickelson 7/1

Phil needs to win, have Matt Kuchar finish out of the top four, Dustin Johnson finish out of the top three, and have Charley Hoffman and Steve Stricker not finish second; if Paul Casey finishes second, Casey and Mickelson would go to a playoff for the FedExCup championship and the $10 million.

2. Steve Stricker 9/1

Stricker will win FedExCup if he wins The Tour Championship; could finish as low as third and still win FedExCup.

3. Dustin Johnson 9/1

Will win FedExCup if he wins The Tour Championship; could finish as low as sixth and still win FedExCup..

4. Matt Kuchar 10/1

Will win FedExCup if he wins The Tour Championship; could finish as low as 29th and still win FedExCup.

5. Paul Casey 14/1

Will win FedExCup if he wins The Tour Championship; could finish second and still win FedExCup.

Kuchar takes Fed Ex lead

Matt Kuchar hit a ridiculous approach shot to two feet on the first playoff hole at The Barclays to win over Martin Laird.

Laird, who appeared to have the tournament in hand, needed to two putt from thirty feet on the 18th hole in regulation for the win. Unfortunately for him, he crushed his first putt a good eight feet past the hole and then missed coming back for a three putt.

With his first victory of the year at the first playoff event of the Fed Ex Cup, Kuchar takes the overall point lead in the quest for the $10,000,000.00 prize.

"Even if I had shut it down without a win, I would have felt it was a great year," Kuchar said. "To win, it's an incredible year."

Current Top Five:

1) Matt Kuchar
2) Steve Stricker
3) Martin Laird
4) Justin Rose
5) Ernie Els

Tiger clawing his way back

Look out PGA Tour. Tiger is coming soon to a golf course near you.

He shot 65 the opening round and 67 in the final round at the Barclays. Other than one horrendous swing to open round three which led to triple bogey, a missed one foot putt, and one bad nine hole stretch, he played some great golf.

As his new swing starts to kick in, he appears to have much greater control with both his tee shots and his approach shots. It seems to be just a matter of time before he's able to put it all together over four rounds.

With his play at The Barclays, Woods jumped from 112th up to 65th in the point standings. Three events remain in the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs and Woods has won on all three courses in the past. One win will put him right back into contention and it could come this week at round two of the playoffs.

"I haven't won all year," Woods said. "But this is a week that I was very close. I felt that if I would have putted better for all four days, I would have been right there. Looking forward to next week."

European Ryder Cup team set

European Captain Colin Montgomerie made his three captain's picks official today. He choose Padraig Harringtoin, Edoardo Molinari, and Luke Donald, leaving off Paul Casey and Justin Rose.

U.S. Captain Corey Pavin has four picks to make which are expected on September 7th.

The Ryder Cup will take place October 1 -3 at Celtic Manor in Wales as the U.S. will attempt to retain the Cup they won in 2008.

Good numbers for Tiger round one at Barclays

13 /14 Fairways
15 /18 Greens
27 Putts
7 Birdies
65
Tie for 1st

For one day, Tiger Woods played like the number one player in the world again.

"It's exciting to hit the ball flush again," Woods said. "It's something I've been missing all year."

Asked whether he thinks he can still break Nicklaus's record of 18 majors, he responded, "Absolutely."

"I look at it this way," Woods said, "Hogan won all nine of his majors at my age and older. I think for every kid out there, the goal is to get there. That is the benchmark in our sport, and that's still my goal."

Woods needs to finish approximately in the top 50 this week to advance to the second round of the playoffs. He's off to a good start and certainly thinks he can still win the whole thing.

"I figure if I win, I should be OK," Woods said.

Three first time major winners again in 2010

For the second consecutive year, there were three first time major winners. With so many good young players coming up, this may become a trend unless Tiger can get things together again.

In 2009, Angel Cabrera won his second career major at the Masters. After that there were all first timers with Lucas Glover taking the U.S. Open, Stewart Cink taking the British, and Y.E. Yang winning the PGA.

In 2010, Phil Mickelson won his fourth overall major at the Masters. From there, more first timers with Graeme McDowell winning the U.S. Open, Louis Oosthuizen taking the British, and Martin Kaymer winning the PGA.
